6 Questions to Ask Before Choosing A Mobility Scooter

6 Questions to Ask Before Choosing A Mobility Scooter

Having limited mobility can really put a damper on your life. Not being able to do the things, or visit the places, you used to love can be devastating. Fortunately, mobility scooters can solve all of your mobility issues. The question is, which mobility scooter is right for you? Here are six questions to ask when choosing a mobility scooter.

What to Ask Yourself

When considering a mobility scooter, there are a number of questions which you should ask yourself. These will help you determine what model or type of scooter is right for you and which to avoid. These questions include, but are not limited to:

Why Do You Want a Scooter?

One of the most critical questions to consider before deciding upon a mobility scooter is what is your primary reason for needing a scooter in the first place? If it is because of limited mobility due to, say, arthritis, do you expect your mobility to further decrease over the next few years? Perhaps it is for outdoor use, as covering large distances on foot is simply not practical for you anymore. Considering why exactly you need a scooter is a great first step to finding the right one for you.

How Often Will You Use It?

Another key question to ask yourself is how often you’ll use the scooter. Answering this will allow you to best determine which model and price-point work best for you. If your scooter will be for occasional use, for example, one that is less expensive and easier to store away may be the best option.

Will You Travel with It?

Mobility scooters come In many shapes and sizes. Some are much easier to disassemble and transport than others.  Will you take it on cruises? To the airport? Understanding how often you will travel with your scooter is important, as it may steer you towards a lighter, easier-to-assemble model, as opposed to a more substantial scooter which is not intended for frequent travel.

Questions to Ask When Buying

Once you have determined which style of scooter is right for you, there are several questions which you should talk to your mobile scooter dealer about. These will allow you to make a more informed decision on which model scooter suits your needs best:

Operational Range

It may seem like one of the last questions that may pop into your mind but having a clear understanding of the operational range is critical when choosing a mobility scooter. Operation range refers to how far a scooter can go between recharging the batter – generally between 7-25 miles) and is important to know, as certain scooters with lower ranges may not suit your lifestyle or needs.

Turning Radius

Turning radius – or how easily a scooter can turn in tight spaces – is another important question. If the areas where your scooter will be used is not particularly spacious, for example,  having a scooter with a wide radius is impractical.

Weight Capacity

Most scooters have a weight capacity of between 250-350 pounds. Knowing how much weight a chair can support is key to know, as you definitely don’t want a scooter which can’t support your weight, and the ability of a scooter to hold more weight may mean better performance overall by the scooter.
